In Mexico and the Southwest, a small house, especially one that functions as an inn or guest house
Welcome to our private and peaceful casita, 3 miles from the historic Mesilla Plaza in southern New Mexico. Pajarito Casita is on a semi-rural, county-maintained road, less than a mile from the town of Mesilla. There are no street lights, making for dark skies and stargazing at night. The two-acre, gated property is bordered by pecan orchards and is a haven for wildlife. The property includes a main home, the casita, and studio space, where local artists produce their craft. A garage for parking is available.
ABOUT THIS SPACE
The casita is located where the desert meets the pecan orchards. Pecans have become synonymous with southern New Mexico, as Dona Ana County is one of the top pecan-producing regions in the US. There are 9 pecan trees on the property and a pecan farm across the street.
On the property, you will walk through a private gate to the entrance of the casita, which sits adjacent to the main house on two acres. You can enjoy some peace and quiet on the patio, surrounded by native desert plants such as cacti, mesquite and Palo Verde trees, yucca, palms, and agaves. Many of these are in colorful bloom March – October. In the evening, you can sit outside by the wood-burning chimenea (metal firebox), enjoying the end of the day.
Artfully arranged, this private and peaceful space seems much larger than its 300+ square feet. Rejuvenate after your adventures in the full-size bed, from which you can view the gardens. There is a bar with a microwave, single-burner stove, portable oven, mini refrigerator, utensils, and a sink. A Keurig is there for you to enjoy, along with complimentary coffee (Decaf and regular) and tea. An outdoor gas grill is also available for use.
Keeping in line with the art-focused nature of the property, the interior and outside walls are adorned with pieces by blue-chip Southwest artists, and the upper shelves display hand-made Navajo folk art. When it's warm, there is a Frigidaire air conditioner, plus two ceiling fans (one in the bedroom and one in the main room). If you get cold, there is a baseboard heater, as well as a portable unit. There is a full bathroom, with sink, toilet, tub/shower combo.
Unwind with your favorite shows on the Roku TV, or listen to music on the portable CD player. There is free WiFi and access to a washer and dryer. With advanced notice, guests can use the indoor pool and spa on the property.
The casita is in a semi-rural location a half-mile from the Rio Grande. House-trained dogs are welcome. The property is gated, but small dogs can slip through the grates. At any given time, there is wildlife on or near the property. This often includes quail, rabbits, squirrels, fox, bobcat, roadrunners, coyote, and a variety of birds. For the protection of your pet—as well as the wildlife—supervision is encouraged. These animals are not aggressive and will not threaten you. They co-exist with us and us with them.
You will be 3 miles from the Mesilla Plaza and Fountain Theater, 1 mile from the Mesilla Valley Bosque State Park, and 6 miles from the Downtown Farmer’s Market. The Mesilla Plaza, with numerous shops and restaurants, is only 3 miles away. Near the Plaza, La Posta de Mesilla, Andele Mexican Restaurant, Double Eagle Restaurant, Lescombes Winery & Bistro, Luna Rossa Winery & Pizzeria, and the Bean Coffee House, provide a range of dining/beverage experiences. FARMesilla, also located in Mesilla, is a farm store and eatery providing locally grown produce and fresh eggs, as well as indoor and outdoor seating for food, craft beers, and wine. Fresh pecan pies are usually available, as is locally-baked bread and pastries. In the fall, fresh green chile is roasted on the premises. You can buy a small bag of roasted green chile or a full gunny sack.
On the property is XYZ Studios. This is space we rent to artists, who produce their craft on-site. You are welcome to walk over to the studio, but take your cue from the artists as to whether they are willing to share and talk with you about what they're doing. At times, some of the artists hang their works for sale.
Over 15 miles of no vehicle access biking and pedestrian trails along the Rio Grande are ½ mile away, and the hiking trails of the Organ Mountain Desert Peaks National Monument are 35 minutes away. White Sands National Monument is one hour away. We don't have bicycles available for use on the property, but they can be rented in town here:
